Postal Vote Refresh

We are writing to people across the Borough who need to renew their postal or proxy vote.

As part of important security measures all postal and proxy voters must provide a fresh signature specimen every five years. Everyone who is required to submit a fresh signature will have received a new application form through the post and will have until Monday 12 February 2018 to return it in the pre-paid envelope provided. If documentation is not received by that date, they will have to re-apply or cast their vote in person at a polling station.

There is also the option to tell us that if they no longer wish to vote by post.

More than 16,000 people currently hold an absent vote and around 4,823 of those have been contacted to provide a fresh signature. We have to send a reminder application form to everyone who does not reply before Monday 12 February 2018 and cancellation notices will be sent on Tuesday 13 February 2018 to those people who have not responded at all. This doesnt stop voters from creating a new postal vote in the future.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • I havent received a refresh form.
Fresh signatures are only gathered every 5 years, so the current signature we have must be less than 5 years old. You will get your refresh letter another year.
  • Why have I received a form but my partner hasnt? We are both postal voters?
This will be because of the date when the postal vote was set up and processed. Your partner will receive there refresh letter another year.
  • My elderly relative can no longer provide a consistent signature on the form.
Contact the Council on 01642 774774 and we will arrange for a postal vote waiver application form to be sent. You can assist your relative to fill in this form and return it to the Council. Once a waiver is granted, this means that your relative will not have to sign for their postal vote in the future.
  • Can I talk to someone about this?
Any enquiries can be made to the Electoral Registration Office at the Council on 01642 774774 and we will be happy to help.
  • Do I have to renew my date of birth?
    No this is optional.
