Secondary school admissions

The transfer from primary to secondary school is an important milestone in a childs education. It can be a time of anxiety as well as anticipation and excitement for those concerned. Staff in the People Services Department and in schools are committed to making the transition as smooth as they can and wherever possible, trying to meet your first preference for a secondary school.

This section deals with the arrangements for admitting pupils to secondary schools in Redcar & Cleveland. Each secondary school produces a prospectus and parents can obtain a copy by contacting the school direct.

Four types of admissions authority operate for secondary schools in the Borough. For the secondary schools with no religious affiliations, the Local Authority (LA) is the admissions authority .For secondary schools with Foundation Status the governing body is the admissions authority and for Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Aided school the governing body of the school is also the admissions authority. For Acadamies, the Academy Trust is the admission authority.

Officers of the LA maintain close liaison with secondary head teachers on all educational matters. The head teachers, as a body, have expressed the opinion that all secondary schools in Redcar & Cleveland serve their community well and provide a first class, all round education. Given this, Redcar & Cleveland head teachers hope that all parents/guardians would give consideration to their admission zone school .

Parents should note that attendance of a child at a particular primary school does not entitle him/her to a place in a particular secondary school. Places at secondary school are offered in accordance with the procedures outlined below.
