The surf at Saltburn is reputed to be some of the best outside Cornwall.
There is the Surf School that is open throughout the summer months that offers lessons, deck chairs, windbreak and board hire.
National events are held at Saltburn during the year attracting competitors from all corners of England, Scotland and Wales.

A popular area for Windsurfing and Kite surfing is Coatham beach opposite Majuba car park. It is a growing sport that brings many visitors to the area. Look out for the annual Kite Festival (Kitetastic, which is usually held outside the main summer season) always check weather conditions before heading out.

Jet skiing is becoming increasingly popular along our coast, before you launch a jet ski you must check with a lifeguard or the Resorts Manager. Jet skis are to be launched from Granville Terrace slipway at Redcar. Please be aware of the dangers of the scars at low tide.

Diving is also popular in Redcar, especially due to the numerous wrecks which lie along the coast. Dennys Diving offers lessons and equipment purchase.

Scaling dam is a great place to practice sailing it offers the beginner and the more experienced the chance to try their hand at sailing in a safe environment. RYA Learn to sail weekends are available throughout the year for all abilities.
Once you have mastered the techniques the favourite place to sail is along the South Gare which provides a safer sailing venue if the onshore swell at Redcar is too high.

Fishing is very popular along the coast, the most popular areas for fishing in the borough are South Gare, Redcar, Saltburn, Staithes and Scaling Dam. Redcar offers a range of choices for fishing, from flat sandy beaches to heavy rocky gullies. In the winter months the main catches are Codling, Whiting, Coalfish and Flounder and during the summer months Mackerel but you can also find crab and lobster.
South Gare breakwater is popular for fishing, but caution is needed when weather conditions are not favourable.

Saltburn is a very popular destination all year round from the pier. The Pier tends to be the favourite as the high tide makes fishing in deeper water more attractive. Other popular fishing venues in the Borough include Scaling Dam and Lockwood Beck. Scaling Dam is the largest stretch of water in the North Yorkshire Moors National Park; the reservoir is stocked with rainbow trout. Fishing permits are acquired from the fishing lodge located at the reservoir. Lockwood Beck is a 60-acre fishery set in the woodlands on the fringe of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. This venue is suitable for fly-fishing only.
