Small Business Rate Relief and Retail relief

Retail Rate Relief is ending on 31st March 2016. The Council will not be granting this relief towards your 2016/17 charge. However, if you occupied a retail premises between 1st April 2015 and 31st March 2016 and feel you may be eligible for the relief. It is still possible to apply for these retrospectively until 30th September 2016.

Which properties will benefit from Retail Business Rate Relief?

If you occupy retail premises you may be eligible for a discount of up to £1,500 for 2015/16. This includes premises such as pubs, cafes, restaurants and shops. Your premises must have a rateable value under £50,000 to be eligible.

Small business rates relief

For the period 1st April 2016 to 31st March 2017 Small Business Rate Relief is available at 100% for ratepayers occupying single properties with a rateable value up to £6,000, with relief declining in percentage terms on a sliding scale until it is 0% at £12,000.

Properties with a Rateable Value of £12,000 to £17,999 will have their bills calculated using the Small Business Rate Relief multiplier only.

The relief is only available to ratepayers with either:

  1. one property
  2. one main property and other additional properties providing those additional properties have rateable values less than £2,599.
The rateable value of the property mentioned in (a),or the sum of the rateable values of all properties mentioned in b), must be under £18,000.

A claim for Small Business Rate Relief can only be made for one property.

If a Rate-payer ceases to be eligible, the relief will end from that date.

If a ratepayer is eligible for charity relief or rural rate relief they will receive that relief rather than the small business rate relief. Application forms are available on request.

YOU MUST ADVISE US IF YOUR CIRCUMSTANCES CHANGE IN ANY OF THE FOLLOWING WAYS (Warning it is a Criminal Offence for a Rate-Payer to give false information when making an application for Small Business Rate Relief)
  1. Where the Rateable Value of any property you occupy in Redcar & Cleveland or any other local authority increases.
  2. Where you occupy any additional business premises in England.
  3. Where you occupy any premises which you had listed as empty on your application form for Small Business Rate Relief.
  4. Where there are any changes or additions to the liable parties or any changes to your company name.
