Dark Smoke from Chimneys

Section 1 of the Clean Air Act 1993 prohibits the emission of dark smoke from a chimney of any building and this includes chimneys which serve the furnace of any fixed boiler or plant on trade or industrial premises.

If your business is not in a smoke control area then you may emit light smoke from the chimney.

Please note: where industrial and commercial chimneys are concerned the law takes account of starting the appliance and putting more fuel in (charging) the appliance and for soot blowing. Short periods are allowed for the emission of dark smoke from chimneys.
