Sewage Treatment Works

There are two sewage treatment works in the Borough one at Bran Sands and a second at Marske. These sites are owned and managed by Northumbrian Water.

At these sites sewage is filtered to remove solid matter, and the effluent is then treated before being discharged into the sea - activities at these sites are monitored and regulated by the Environment Agency.

On very rare occasions sewage treatment works may encounter unforeseen technical failures. Sites have a responsibility to take reasonable steps to minimise odour from these sites and ensure that serious equipment failures do not happen. However, the unforeseen technical failure of plant at a sewage treatment works may cause significant odour.
