Installation of furnaces

Furnaces or a fixed boiler in a building used for commercial activities, cannot be installed without prior notification to the local authority. The furnace must be capable of operating continuously without emitting smoke using the fuel for which it is designed.

The Act requires certain types of furnaces, including those burning pulverised fuel, to be fitted with grit and dust arrestment plant approved by the local authority. The height of the chimney serving certain appliances also has to be approved by the local authority.

In some cases chimney height approval may also be required to ensure that the chimney is at a safe height to enable sufficient dilution of any pollutants.

You should contact the Environmental Protection Team prior to installation.
