What is the FIS?

What is the Families' Information
Service (FIS)?

The Families' Information Service provides information, advice and guidance for parents, carers, practitioners and children on the wide range of services and activities/events available for children and young people aged 0-20 years old. We provide a freephone help-line service as well as providing an on-line directory of services through our People's Information Network (PIN) website.

We can help you:
  • Find local childcare. We offer independent information and advice about the childcare provision throughout Redcar and Cleveland, including registered day nurseries, childminders, playgroups, creches, out of school clubs, and unregistered breakfast clubs, parent and toddler groups, holiday playschemes and holiday activities.

  • Find the services you need for your children aged 0-20 years old, whether they be specialist support services, leisure, health or training organisations, you will find them listed on our People's Information Network (PIN) at www.peoplesinfonet.org.uk

  • Find local activities and events for children using our on-line directory of activities and events across Redcar and Cleveland:

  • Find appropriate childcare or short break activities for your children with additional needs or disabilities (through our Disabled Children's Access Officer)

  • With support through the schools admissions process for Primary and Secondary School, including support with appeals (through our School Choice Advisor)

  • With advice and guidance through the Statutory Assessment process for children and young people with SEN (through our Parent Partnership Officer)

  • With information about becoming a registered childminder.

  • With information about Free Nursery Education places for children aged 2, 3 & 4 years old in schools, day nurseries, playgroups and with registered childminders across the borough

  • Join your local SureStart Children's Centre. If you're not sure how to register with your local Children's Centre we can send you their latest "What's On Guide" listing their activity sessions, and a registration form.

  • With benefit checks - if you are 18 - 65 years old and are the parent of a child or young person, we can do a free benefit calculation to make sure that you are claiming everything you should be. Simply give us a call on our free-phone helpline.

  • If you are considering becoming a Foster Carer - the team can provide information, advice and guidance to people considering fostering. The Local Authority needs to recruit more foster carers for its children and young people in care. As a foster carer you will get paid an allowance to cover expenses, and will receive ongoing support, training and supervision from the Fostering Social Work team. We will be pleased to discuss the process with you in more detail and send you an information and application pack.
