Ensuring Redcar & Cleveland is successful as a visitor destination means knowing who our visitors are and what they want from a short break or holiday. It also means identifying potential new markets and their needs as visitors. To do this the tourism team carry out research to look at visitor profiles, visitor expenditure, perception of the area and the key drivers for their visit.

Each year, Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council commission visitor research from STEAM (Scarborough Tourism Economic Activity Monitor). This is a widely accepted model designed to provide an indicative base for monitoring trends based on monthly and annual statistical outputs. STEAM depends on accurate information supplied from a range of sources and uses a databank of variables and methodologies to support the tourism outputs such as visitor numbers, visitor spend, jobs supported and monthly variations in tourism activity.
