The Corporate Communications Team

Who we are...
The Corporate Communications and Web Team is based within the Corporate Resources Directorate of the Council.

The team delivers external and digital communications as well as campaigns, marketing, branding, design and print, and internal communications. The communications team also takes the lead on consultation to canvas the views of our residents to inform priorities and service developments.

We're here to help...

The services provided by the team include:

External communications

The communications team issues press releases proactively to inform the public about Council initiatives, good work, achievements and events. The team deals with media enquiries, often issuing statements and comments to meet media deadlines. The team also organises radio and television interviews where appropriate. Members of the communications team also meet regularly with key members of the print and broadcast media, as well as other partners and key stakeholders to build and sustain trusted relationships.

The team produces This is Redcar & Cleveland our residents' magazine that reaches every household in the borough (around 62,000) four times a year. This is also available to view online on the Council's website. And a business update produced by the team, This is Redcar & Cleveland Update, is also circulated to local businesses and key stakeholders on a monthly basis featuring news and updates from cabinet members.

The communications team also works alongside the Cleveland Emergency Planning Team to ensure that the Council has a co-ordinated communications response in case of emergencies and that we are linked in with the appropriate emergency services and other partners.

Digital communications

The communications team works alongside Council staff to update and manage the Council's website. We want to improve people's ability to interact with the Council online and identify new ways of working with the community through digital communications. We now have a live chat facility on our website where our residents can talk to a member of our customer service team online. We are in the process of redeveloping our website, to make it easier to use, quicker and more interactive. We are also in the process of developing a mobile application that includes key Council services such as reporting forms, jobs listings, councillors information, building locations including schools, sure start centres and leisure centres and tourism information, plus events and places to visit.

The team also manages the Council's corporate social media pages such as Facebook, Twitter, Flickr and YouTube. There is also an alerts system for emergencies that works through the website. Members of the communications team are happy to provide help and advice to members who are interested in setting up a social media account and on how to use it effectively to engage with residents.

Campaigns and marketing

The team works alongside colleagues and partners to develop, deliver and evaluate co-ordinated public relations and marketing campaigns to raise awareness of the Council's priorities to both internal and external audiences. Planning is currently underway for forthcoming campaigns which will include themes under caring for the environment, healthy lifestyles and promoting Redcar & Cleveland as a great place to visit.

Branding, design and print
The communications team is responsible for ensuring that the Council's corporate identity is used consistently throughout the organisation and in all communications literature. A strong brand inspires confidence and positivity, which is why consistency is needed and a corporate identity style guide has been developed which should be followed at all times. The style guide also adheres to legislative requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act. Advice on corporate identity can be provided by the team. The communications team offers an in-house web and print design service where possible, and provides help and support to ensure best value for money if it is necessary to use an external supplier.

The communications team takes a lead on consultation. The objective of our consultation programme is to ensure that we canvas the views of our residents to inform priorities and service development. We believe that members have a vital role to play in the consultation process through their leadership roles within the communities they represent and we welcome their assistance.

Internal communications
There are well-established internal communications channels in the Council which celebrate the good work of our staff as well as updating them about key issues.

The team produces a weekly Members' Media Briefing which is a weekly media update with a forward look to the week ahead.
