Town Twinning

The Borough of Redcar and Cleveland is twinned with Troisdorf in Germany. Troisdorf is mid-way between Bonn and Cologne in the Rhine Valley. The 10 small towns which make up Troisdorf are a mixture of rural, riverside, historical, commercial and industrial communities - similar to Redcar and Cleveland.

The twinning was originally set up on 22nd September 1990 (when the Council was then known as Langbaurgh Borough Council) it was further reaffirmed in 1998.

Although the Council has a part to play in twinning, it is the Town Twinning Association, which is an organisation made up of local people, which encourages the links between the areas concerned, it was constituted in 1990. Visits to Troisdorf take place bi-annually, with visits from Troisdorf to Redcar and Cleveland in the intervening years.

The Redcar & Cleveland Twinning Association Committee meets on a regular basis and works closely with their counterparts the Troisdorf Twinning Association. They have a new developing website at

The Mayor represents the Council at town twinning meetings and will report back to the Council on any issues or problems. The Mayor will also hold receptions for any town twinning visitors.

Twinning encourages international links and contacts for ordinary people with common interests, some of the benefits of twinning: If you would like to join or become involved in the Redcar & Cleveland Twinning Association please contact the current Chair Pam Stenson (Tel 01287 638178 or the Council contact is Jane Holmes (Tel. 01642 444501
