Abandoned vehicles

Report an abandoned vehicle - online form

Refuse Disposal Amenity Act 1978

The Council is involved in a very successful partnership with Cleveland Police and Fire Brigade in a scheme called 'Operation Magpie' to address the problems of abandoned vehicles.

The Area Management Directorate will investigate, monitor and remedy possible hazards to both the environment and the public.

This involves dealing with abandoned vehicles and 'End of Life' (EOL) vehicles. We consider a vehicle to be abandoned if it is untaxed with no current keeper. We consider an EOL vehicle to be in a dangerous condition, i.e. left unsecured. Abandoned vehicles are unsightly for local residents and can increase the risk of arson and vandalism. Both of these activities put human lives, properties and the environment at risk. If you have a vehicle that you no longer want, it is up to you to dispose of it properly. It is against the law to abandon the vehicle.
