Citizenship Ceremonies

When a person is granted British Citizenship by the Home Office he/she is required to attend a Citizenship Ceremony. The ceremony is intended to welcome the new Citizen to the United Kingdom and give added significance to the acquisition of British Citizenship.

A person wishing to become a British Citizen should apply to the Home Office. Once the application has been approved the Home Office will send the applicant a notification letter which advises them to contact the local Register Office to arrange attendance at a ceremony.

The Citizenship Ceremony must take place within three months of an application being approved.

A Group Citizenship Ceremony is an opportunity for new Citizens to celebrate the occasion with their families and friends. Usually, the Citizenship Ceremonies in Redcar & Cleveland take place at Redcar Heart Register Office. The Citizenship Ceremonies are a unique Civic occasion in which the Mayor takes part to help to welcome the new Citizens. Although it is a formal occasion, a friendly atmosphere prevails, and new Citizens are given all the support they need to relax and enjoy the occasion.

During the ceremony each new Citizen either swears an oath of allegiance or makes an affirmation of allegiance to the Queen and also makes a pledge of commitment to the United Kingdom. It is at this point that Citizenship is conferred. The National Anthem will be played and each new British Citizen will then be presented with their Citizenship Certificate by the Mayor.

If a person prefers to have an individual Citizenship Ceremony this can be arranged. There is a fee of £125.00 payable for an individual ceremony. Further details can be obtained by contacting the Register Office on (01642) 444440.
