Riding Establishments

Licence Summary
To run a riding establishment (where horses or ponies are hired out for riding or used for riding instruction), you need a licence from the local authority where the establishment is located. For establishments in Redcar and Cleveland you need to apply to Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council.

Application Evaluation Process
Before deciding an application Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council must consider a report from a veterinary surgeon or practitioner detailing whether the premises are suitable for a riding establishment and detailing the conditions of the premises and any horses. The costs for these inspections can vary and are payable by the applicant.

A fee of £270.00 will be payable for applications and conditions may be attached.

Will Tacit Consent Apply?
Yes. This means that you will be able to act as though your application is granted if you have not heard from us within 28 days.

How to Apply
We aim to acknowledge your application within three working days. If you have applied online we will acknowledge your application via email.

Failed Application Redress

A licence holder who wishes to appeal against a condition can appeal to a local Magistrates' Court.
