Tree Care & Management

The Council has a positive approach to tree care within the borough and have adopted a Tree & Woodland Strategy to ensure the sustainable care of the Council's tree stock.

There are laws to protect certain individual or groups of trees. Those trees that have Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs) or are within Conservation areas are protected under a range of legislation that makes it an offence to carry out any work on those trees without permission from the Local Authority. For more information on Conservation Areas, visit our planning web page:

Trees that grow on Council owned land or on public open spaces are also protected as they are deemed as Council property. Anyone damaging these can be prosecuted.

The Authority has its own professional tree maintenance team who carry out all appropriate tree care and maintenance to trees owned by the council. This service is also available to businesses and private residential properties who can request a quote for private work.

If you have any queries, would like advice or require a quotation for tree care and maintenance, please contact the Council on 01642 774774.

Advice relating to Council owned trees

In line with the policies set out in the Councils Our Tree and Woodland Strategy the Council reserve the right to only prune trees that are causing or are in danger of causing physical obstruction and or damage. The Council acknowledge where individual trees are concerned that there is no automatic right to light, TV or satellite reception and that pruning individual trees to remedy these situations, is a short term measure and is likely to cause longer term problems. However where trees are causing a physical obstruction and are growing within 3 metres of buildings, the Council will look to selectively prune branches to remedy the situation
