What is the Nationality Checking Service?

The Nationality Checking Service (NCS) is a basic advice service which aims to help those seeking British Citizenship make a good quality and complete application.

The NCS provided is to help ensure that your application is properly completed and submitted with all the relevant supporting documents.

The service involves a person wishing to apply for British Citizenship making an appointment to visit a participating council with a trained adviser.

Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council have a trained Nationality Checking Service Adviser at the Register Office, Redcar & Cleveland Leisure and Community Heart, Ridley Street, Redcar TS10 1TD

The adviser will guide the applicant through their application form, ensuring that it is correctly completed, signed and accompanied by the correct fee. The adviser will also perform an identity check and will take and certify copies of passports and any other valuable documents. This means that the applicant does not have to surrender his/her passport or other important documents while the application is being processed.

The adviser will also check that evidence of the applicants knowledge of life in the United Kingdom has been provided and will take in this evidence in original form.

The form, copies and evidence of knowledge of life in the UK are then sent to the Home Office.

You do not have to live in the Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council area to use this service.

How can we help you?
Applicants wishing to use the Nationality Checking Service will need to make a personal visit to the Register Office by appointment only.

The current fee for this service is £85.00 for each adult application and £42.00 per child inclusive of VAT.

A £32.00 non-refundable booking fee per person is taken on the day of booking an appointment, this fee is deducted from the current fee as long as the individual turns up on the date and time given. If you do not turn up for this appointment once booked, this £32.00 booking fee will be lost.

What should you do if you are not happy with this service?

You can make a complaint to the Register Office using the Redcar & Cleveland complaint procedure or make your complaint to the council (see Complaint Procedure on the Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council website)

You do not have to use the Redcar & Cleveland complaint scheme.
You can make your complaint direct to the Office of the Immigration Services Commissioner, 5th Floor, 21 Bloomsbury Street, London, WC1B 3HF. Leaflets detailing how to complain are also available on the OISC website .
