PLANNERS have given the final go-ahead today (Thursday, September 29) for a £31 million leisure, business support and community facility in the heart of Redcar.

The ambitious development on the area between Kirkleatham Street and Coatham Road will start in the New Year and will include:
  • a new 6 lane, 25 metre swimming pool, training and leisure pool
  • dance hall and performance space
  • fitness suite and junior gym
  • sports hall
  • business space for small to medium sized enterprises
  • flexible community facilities including a debating chamber and relocated registry office
  • improved car parking
  • landscaped public spaces.
The scheme will create and safeguard 260 jobs and the Council are committed to making use of local suppliers wherever possible so the whole area benefits.

Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Tourism, Councillor Sheelagh Clarke said:

"It is great news that the detailed plans have been approved and we can make a start on creating a real attraction for Redcar residents and visitors to the town.

Redcar has waited a long time for improved leisure facilities and I cant wait to see this ambitious scheme start to take shape."
