The R.A.T Card is a travel pass which will allow young people to travel on any local commercial bus service throughout Redcar & Cleveland, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough and Stockton for half the adult fare, as many times as they like, any time of the day, 365 days of the year.
Six teenagers from 'The Word', a group previously known as the East Cleveland Youth Forum, wanted to make transport more accessible for young people. They got the Community involved and got thousands of residents signatures to support the new Travel Scheme.
Councillor Mary Lanigan, Cabinet Member for Highways, Transportation and Planning said:
"By working with the young people from 'The Word' group we have been able to show our commitment to providing better facilities to young people across the Borough.
"This new travel card benefits our young people and allows them to access half price travel on public transport across Redcar & Cleveland, Middlesbrough, Stockton and Hartlepool and we would like to encourage all our young people to take advantage of this scheme."
The pass costs £10 per year, and application forms are available from every library, council office, secondary school and college throughout the Borough.
It can be applied for from two weeks before a person's 16th birthday and is valid from 1st September to 31st August each year, and needs to be renewed each year.
To apply for this pass, all you need is the following:
- A completed application form
- £10 to pay for the R.A.T. Card
- Proof of address
- Proof of age
- A passport sized photograph with name and date of birth on the back
Parents, relatives or friends can take the completed form and documents together with £10 to the nearest library. Alternatively an application form can be downloaded from the Council's web site under the Transport section then, Public Transport.
