Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council's Cabinet gave approval this week to bid for Government funding to rebuild four of its schools.
The following schools have been included in the Redcar & Cleveland bid - Nunthorpe Secondary School and the Laurence Jackson School in Guisborough, Handale Primary School in Loftus and Westgarth Primary School in Marske.
Councillor Joan Guy, Cabinet Member for Childrens Services and Education said:
"Despite the money available being limited it is important we take every opportunity we can to ensure our schools have the best facilities possible.
Head Teachers and Governing Body representatives from all four schools are supportive of the bid which will enable us to continue to raise standards in our schools."
The Government's Priority Schools Building Programme is designed to address those schools in England that are in the worst condition under a five year PFI programme. It is envisaged that between 100-300 schools nationally will be rebuilt through the programme and that the programme will include a mix of primary, secondary, special schools, sixth form colleges and alternative school provision.
A bid has been made for each school and it is not known whether one or all of the schools will be accepted.
It is expected that successful bids will be announced by December 2011.
