BUILDING and Construction students at Redcar College visited the site of the new leisure, business support and community facility in Redcar recently to witness the 90 tonne piling rig in action.

The specialist machinery will be on site for approximately two months and drill the equivalent of 8,000 metres or 320 swimming pool lengths.

And when complete the work will provide a water tight membrane around the site of the new £31m development.

Cabinet Member for Children's Services and Education, Councillor Joan Guy said:

"The new leisure, business support and community facility in the heart of Redcar will create a real asset for the town and the Council are committed to involving the local community and young people every step of the way.

We are currently in the process of installing an on-site classroom facility for schools and interested groups to visit and find out more about the ambitious development taking place."

Redcar College Course Tutor, David Robson added:

"We would like to thank the Council and Willmott Dixon for the opportunity to visit the different sites in Redcar including the Vertical Pier and the Redcar Leisure and Community Heart.

These opportunities help the students visualise all the activities involved with a major project and the feedback from the students has been really positive.

Placements on the leisure centre project have also been offered to the students later in the year which will provide further valuable insight into construction and the working environment

The development will bring first class facilities to the town and will include:
  • a 6 lane, 25 metre swimming pool, training and leisure pool
  • dance hall and performance space
  • fitness suite and junior gym
  • sports hall
  • business space for small to medium sized enterprises
  • flexible community facilities including a debating chamber and relocation register services
  • improved and additional car parking
  • landscaped public space
A fly through of the scheme is available to view at www.redcar-cleveland.gov.uk/regeneration and a model of the development is on show at the Redcar Regeneration Centre on the Esplanade next to Pacittos Ice Cream parlour in Redcar.
