Scheme gives coaches a sporting chance

SIXTEEN sporting enthusiasts are on track to become the coaches of the future after completing a training scheme.

The 'Step into Coaching' initiative, run by Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council's Sports Development Team, gives budding trainers the chance to secure recognised qualifications.

And the first successful candidates to gain the Level 2 Award in Community Sports Leadership were honoured at a ceremony at Kirkleatham Museum, Redcar.

They were presented with certificates by the Mayor of Redcar & Cleveland, Councillor Olwyn Peters.

The course involved both theory and practical sessions on planning and delivering sporting activities for all ages.

The coaches are now able to independently deliver sport and physical activity sessions in a variety of settings, from sports and youth clubs to leisure centres.

Councillor Mark Hannon, Cabinet Member for Economic Development, Culture, Leisure and Tourism, said: "This course has proved a big success and I hope that those who completed it can use the skills they have learned to inspire others to great sporting achievements in the future."

The next Level 2 Award in Community Sports Leadership course will begin on April 3 at Eston Sports Academy. Anyone interested in taking part should contact the Sports Development Team on 01642 496430.
