Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council is delighted to report it is battling the worst winter weather for two decades to ensure main roads are trouble-free and waste collections are made on time.

The Council's Cabinet Member for Highways, Transportation and Planning Councillor Mary Lanigan said: "We want the public to know and appreciate the terrific work our staff are doing during this extremely difficult time.

"Our gritting workforce has been working round the clock for over two weeks now, using hundreds of tons of salt to ensure road conditions are as safe as they possibly can be.

"I'm sure we do not always appreciate what is put in place to keep the wheels turning and I'm delighted to give our staff a public vote of confidence for continued hard work.
"

The Council's Cabinet Member for the Environment Councillor Sylvia Szintai added: "We have to accept that the weather has caused refuse and recycling collections some problems and, of course, the cold spell has coincided with the festive season catch-up arrangements which hasn't helped.

"But collection teams have been battling the conditions over the weekend to try and collect all the missed receptacles and I can confirm that all the residual / household waste bins have been completed.

"We are continuing to gain access to the worst effected areas in order to collect all the recyclable waste from these locations and we've been helped by the gritting and salting teams in the trickiest areas.
"

Council staff from other sections - for example, bus escorts and drivers and cleansing staff are all deployed on duties helping to make sure as many paths are clear and salt bins are full and access to town centres are clear.

Councillor Szintai added: "We're hoping all missed collections will be completed by Wednesday at the latest. And we're also ensuring that our Call Centre staff are updated so they can answer any concerns that residents may have."
