Redcar and Cleveland foster carers to receive council tax discount

Published: 6th Dec 2017

FOSTER carers in Redcar and Cleveland will have their council tax bills discounted under a new scheme to encourage more new carers.

The move, introduced by Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council, will see council-supported foster carers receive a monthly exemption on their council tax up to the amount of £1,500 a year.

The change will begin immediately for newly recruited foster carers, and will be rolled out to current carers in the new council tax year in April 2018.

Councillor Craig Hannaway, cabinet member for children, said: "Our foster carers do such an invaluable and rewarding job taking care of Redcar and Cleveland's vulnerable children. This incentive is not only to encourage more people to consider fostering, but to help lighten the load of those already making such a difference in our community.

"We as a council are determined to support foster carers in every way we can. We are so grateful for all they do for our children, and all the support they give each other. They really are a big family of wonderful people.

"So I'm pleased with this incentive, which will make it easier for those who do such an amazing job offering their hearts and homes to those who need it most."

The council is also offering an increase in its weekly children's allowance, which means to cover the cost of providing for a child, carers will receive £145 for children aged 0 4, £165 for 5 10 year olds, £205 for 11 15 year olds and £250 for those aged 16 and over.

Current foster carer Helen Pasco, from Saltburn, said she felt the increased offer would remove financial barriers' which may prevent people from fostering.

Helen has been a foster carer for more than five years and provides care for three young people including a baby with complex health issues. She said: "For me, the best thing about being a foster carer is the difference you can make to a young person's life.

"There's a lot of support from the council and I feel I have a great working relationship with the supervising social workers.

"Increasing the allowances and reducing the council tax will hopefully encourage more people to consider fostering as a career choice."
