Cabinet agrees outline budget plan for the next financial year

Published: 12th Dec 2017

A BALANCED budget for next year has been proposed by Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council's Cabinet.

The council is continuing to deal with large-scale Government cuts as well as increases in demand for its services and has agreed to outline proposals for a Council Tax rise of 1.99%.

Councillor Sue Jeffrey stressed that the authority will continue to focus on growing the economy, protecting frontline services and continuing to support the most vulnerable people in the community.

A three-year programme was agreed last year to deal with budget cuts of £25.6 million by 2020 while at the same time investing at least £8 million in an ambitious Growth Strategy. However, a report to Cabinet today explained that deeper than expected Government cuts as well as increases in costs needed to protect vulnerable children may mean more budget cuts will need to be made by 2020. Cabinet has also agreed to outline proposals to increase the Adult Care Precept by 2% which may only be used to provide care for vulnerable adults

Councillor Sue Jeffrey, Leader of Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council, said: "No-one at the council wants to make cuts or put up Council Tax but we must deal with the reality of continued Government austerity. The cumulative effect of nearly ten years of cuts is being felt in all services right across the council.

"We know that it is pointless looking to central government for more support so we are continuing to invest in the long-term future of the borough and we expect to see very real progress in our £8 million Growth Strategy to boost the economy in the coming year."

Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council has already made in excess of £75 million of cuts since 2010 due to the reduction in Government grant funding.

The detailed budget proposal for the 2018/19 financial year will now be available for further consultation which can be found by visiting

Cabinet will then consider the budget again before recommending it to all councillors in March 2018.
