A FORMER SSI worker has landed a job at a joinery business in South Bank, thanks to SSI Task Force funding.

The SSI Jobs and Skills Fund aims to support employers to create new jobs for individuals made redundant through the SSI closure, which includes direct SSI employees, on-site contractors and supply chain staff. The fund is administered by Tees Valley Unlimited.

Lewis Mescus, who was a process operator at SSI in Redcar before the steelworks closed, has been working at ERW Wood Window Specialists since Monday, December 14th, which was only days after his interview.

The business, which is family run, manufactures and installs a wide range of timber home improvement products in properties across the North of England and is looking to add two further recruits to its team.

Phil Tye, Operations Manager at ERW, said: "We wanted Lewis to make a start before Christmas to give him some reassurance so he can begin the New Year with a fresh start.

"His skills were all transferrable and he is doing a similar role as he did at SSI, this time with timber instead of metal.

"We have two further vacancies available and we encourage people who have been affected by SSI's closure to get in touch about the scheme through the Job Centre."

Lewis Mescus, process operator at ERW, said: "It has been great to find work so quickly. I am pleased to have been matched to the position at ERW and I am already enjoying working here."

Cllr Sue Jeffrey, Leader of Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council said: "We are delighted that Lewis has found employment in the borough, especially just before Christmas.

"It is important that people who have lost their jobs at SSI can still find work with local employers and businesses in Redcar and Cleveland as it benefits the local economy and keeps vital skills within the borough."
