Under 25's Youth Housing Strategy

Our First Youth Homelessness Strategy
In May 2009 we published our first Youth Homelessness Strategy (a document which describes how we intend to help young people, preventing them from becoming homeless and if appropriate, find suitable accommodation).

The aims and objectives within the Strategy (which describe the key issues we want to address and how we intend to do so) have been put together using the results from the research into youth homelessness which was carried out in Redcar & Cleveland in 2008. Through the implementation of the Youth Homelessness Strategy we aim to do the following:
  • Help young people as early as possible rather than waiting until a young person has been asked/is forced to leave by their parents/family
  • Provide suitable advice & support to young people and their families
  • Examine the causes of youth homelessness
  • Make sure a wider range of housing options for young people is available
If you are a young person and would be interested in helping us improve housing services for young people or letting us know what young people think of our service please contact Housing Advice & Information Service Tel 01287 612444.

What we have done so far to deliver the Youth Homelessness Strategy:
  • 550 pupils across the Borough have been provided with housing/homelessness prevention education in schools (delivered by Nightstop).
  • We provide housing advice on a weekly basis in Youth Centres to young people.
  • Commenced consultation with parents regarding services they would like to see developed to help prevent youth homelessness.
  • Developed working arrangements with the Youth Offending Service to ensure that housing advice and housing options are considered at planning for release meetings for young offenders.
  • Working with the Future Jobs Fund we hope to appoint a Young Persons Peer Housing Advice Worker in the coming months.
  • Progressed the development of High Intensity Supported Accommodation Project for Young Homelessness Clients with Multiple Needs. We have now completed the service specification and will shortly commence the tendering process.
  • Improved housing advice and information for young people via the development of a Young Person Housing Advice webpage; and have been involved in the development of the new Tuned In Brand website.
  • Commenced an audit of the housing which is available to young people in the borough and the number lets made by housing associations to under 25 year olds.
