Road Casualty Review 2010

Road collisions cause human misery and impose a cost on the community so we must make every effort to reduce the scale of this impact. The improvement of road safety is a key objective of the Redcar & Cleveland Local Transport Plan 2006 - 2011 and is a key consideration in all works that are undertaken. I am pleased to support the actions that are being taken to reduce the number of road collision casualties that occur on our roads.

The Council is promoting regeneration in the borough with an emphasis on improved access by bus, cycle and on foot to reduce the level of generation of road traffic. It is therefore vital that road safety plays a key role in all initiatives. It is recognised in the Local Transport Plan however, that car ownership and traffic flows are both increasing and thus improving and promoting alternative safer travel choices is an important part of our transport policy.

We maintain our continued commitment to casualty reduction to reduce the impact on vulnerable road users. I am pleased to report that the number of collisions involving vulnerable road users remains well below target levels.

Road safety has always been a high priority for the Council with our transport policies geared towards delivering a continued and lasting improvement in road safety problems across the borough. A range of partnerships is in place to address casualty reduction and a range of initiatives is undertaken involving Education, Enforcement and Engineering measures.
