Food Hygiene Service


The aim of the service is to ensure that food and drink intended for human consumption which is produced, stored, distributed or consumed in the Borough is without risk to the health or safety of the consumer. This is achieved through the following activities:

Premises Inspections

There are over 1200 registered food premises in Redcar & Cleveland ranging from market stalls to factories manufacturing food for national supermarket chains. The food service carries out programmed inspections on all of these food premises on a risk based basis. These programmed inspections are carried out to ensure the food premises comply with current food legislation and are rated under the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme.

Investigating Complaints

All complaints are promptly investigated. These may involve complaints about:
  • hygiene conditions at food premises
  • foreign bodies (e.g. glass, hair) in food
  • sale of food after its use-by date.

Food Sampling

Food sampling is used as part of a planned approach to gather information about the microbiological quality of food.
Priority is given to sampling locally produced high risk foods. We participate in national, regional and locally coordinated sampling programmes.

Sampling is carried out in accordance with the Sampling Policy for the Microbiological Examination of Food.

Investigating cases of food poisoning

We investigate all confirmed cases and outbreaks of food poisoning and food borne disease notified to us by GPs or Public Health England as well as suspected outbreaks.

Providing advice and information

Whether you are involved in a food business or a member of the general public we are happy to provide you with information about any aspect of food hygiene and safety.

Responding to national food alerts

The Food Standards Agency operates a system of notifying local authorities about poor quality/unsafe food. We respond promptly to these warnings to ensure affected foods are removed from sale.

If things go wrong

We have a commitment to put things right as quickly as possible and will respond to complaints in accordance with the Councils Complaints Procedure.

Enforcement policy

We implement a Food Safety and Food Standards Policy to ensure that we enforce the law in a fair and consistent manner and make informed decisions as to appropriate enforcement action.

The Enforcement Policy is available upon request for examination and comment.
