Exercise Referral
Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council have been running a successful Exercise Referral Scheme within the borough for several years. Exercise Referral is an 8 - 16 week supervised activity programme ran and delivered by our team of qualified staff. It is suitable for those suffering from a wide range of physical and emotional health problems. Various forms of activity are used to improve an individuals physical, emotional and social well being.
Activities include mobility exercises, gym based exercise, water-based activity and circuit training. The programme runs 7 days per week at various times throughout the day and offers classes right across the borough. Referrals can be made by a GP, Nurse Practitioner or other Health Professional who has access to your medical notes.
If you feel that you would benefit from taking part in this programme, please contact us
Chair based exercise
These gentle exercise sessions are open to anyone and target those with limited physical ability. Through gentle aerobic exercise and light circuit based sessions, chair based exercise will improve heart and lung health, strengthen muscles and mobilise joints. Classes are held throughout the borough.
Gentle community based exercise classes
These classes are an ideal way to get out, meet new people and improve your health. Led by our fully qualified instructors these tailored sessions will work heart, lungs, muscles and joints to give you a healthier body and a better quality of life. These classes are open to anyone and are held across the borough.
Falls & balance
This group is aimed at those who suffer from falls or balance and co-ordination problems. It provides functional exercises to allow a person re-build their confidence, mobility and strength. The group has helped many members of the community regain their independence. We can provide door to door transport for this session for a small fee.
Improve your mental health
As we all know mental health issues can affect people from all walks of life. It has been proven that the links between improved mental well-being and exercise are extremely strong. A survey carried out by MIND found that 83% of people with mental health problems looked to exercise to lift their mood or to reduce stress. Two thirds said exercise helped to relieve symptoms of depression.
We have recently formed a partnership with Redcar & Cleveland MIND and host exercise sessions within their drop in day services. Please contact your local co-ordinator (details below) for more information.
Health walks
Walking is a great way to get out in the fresh air, see the local scenery and improve your quality of life. It is easy to do and can be great for weight management, reducing cholesterol and improving heart health therefore reducing the risk of developing health problems. We have walks in different areas of the borough.
