In February 2008, the Council commissioned a study into the Creative Industries Sector within Redcar & Cleveland. Amongst the findings in the report was that the Creative Industries Sector delivers a total of £31,796m turnover per annum to the Redcar and Cleveland economy and with the appropriate support and guidance this turnover could be significantly greater.
Visitors provide a prime market for arts-related creative businesses in the borough. There are a number of creative industries in Redcar and Cleveland manufacturing and selling a wide range of hand crafted products- jewellery, greetings cards, paintings, sculptures.
Many of these businesses are operated by one or two individuals and need support in the areas of sales, marketing, accountancy and legal framework. There are many opportunities for tourism and creative industries to work together in areas such as promoting and selling work such as public art, gifts, events, showcasing work, arts venues, and attractions.
Redcar and Cleveland is well placed to further develop and capitalise upon its existing creative industries sector and are following the recommendations and action plan found in this report.
