Achieving and Maintaining Healthy Schools Status

Achieving Healthy School Status
Healthy Schools Audit
Schools complete a Healthy Schools Audit which covers 41 criteria under 4 themes: Healthy Eating, Physical Activity, Emotional Health and Well Being, Personal, Social, Health Education. Schools complete the audit, address gaps with support from local Healthy Schools Programme and then self-validate once all criteria have been achieved.
Each school sends their self-validation form into the Local Healthy Schools Quality Assurance Group (membership reflects 4 themes)
Local Quality Assurance Group considers self-validation
10% sample of schools undergo moderation
Healthy School Status (HSS) achieved and valid for 3 years
Recognition: Healthy Schools Plaque and use of Healthy Schools logo

Maintaining Healthy School Status
Annual Review
Schools complete a Healthy Schools 'Annual Review.' The review enables each school to reflect upon Healthy Schools work. It acts as a checklist to ensure foundations for health and well being have been maintained since achievement of Healthy School Status (HSS). Once a school feels confident that they can answer all of the review questions they self-validate to maintain HSS.
Each school must complete the Healthy Schools Annual Review before their HSS comes to an end.

Year on Year
Each year a school should revisit their Annual Review. If details remain the same since the first review, a school only needs to enter a review date in the question box. If details have changed since the first review, additional information will be added under the question and a date recorded at the end of the amended information. For example, professional development opportunities are likely to be different year on year, PSHE programmes of work may have been amended as a result of staff/pupil feedback for example.
