Eco Village Arts - Ray Lonsdale

Internationally acclaimed artist Ray Lonsdale was commissioned to produce a sculpture for the Eco Village in 2012.

Based on his proposal titled 'Bad Back' (see below), the sculpture has been fabricated from Cor-ten steel.

A 'Meet the Artist' public engagement event took place in South Bank on April 19th 2012 and this gave the community a chance to meet Ray and interact with some of his smaller pieces kindly brought over by Arts Bank in Saltburn. Photo gallery

Two further engagement sessions have taken place with young people in South Bank. The first session was with a year 9 art class at St Peter's School. Ray led a workshop and the students learnt some of the techniques used in Ray's art. Some photo's from the day can be seen here.

The second youth event held in August was in partnership with Kidz Konnekt. Two graffiti workshops were set-up with Toby Heaps, artist in residence at CoMusica in Gateshead and Ray Lonsdale. Young people from South Bank were invited to create designs based on the themes of South Bank, Ray's sculpture for the Eco Village and Golden Boy Green. These designs were then painted onto canvas or fabric before a final design amalgamating all of the young people's ideas was sprayed onto a large board to be displayed in the refurbished Golden boy Green building. Photo's from these sessions can be viewed here.

Following a two month fabrication period the piece was installed in early November 2012. See photo's of the final piece here.

For more information or to comment on the proposals please visit Ray's Facebook page or his website.

A number of Ray's pieces are also available for view at Arts Bank in Saltburn.
