Hollywood comes to Redcar
Redcar took on a new look when Universal Pictures International UK and Working Title, the filmmakers of "Pride & Prejudice", joined up for a new £28 million movie. Atonement, Joe Wrights spectacular adaptation of Ian McEwans novel starring Keira Knightly and James McAvoy.
On general release from 7 September 2007, Atonement used Redcar's fantastic beach for spectacular scenes depicting the evacuation of Dunkirk, with The Regent Cinema, surrounding nature reserve and Corus steelworks also featuring in the movie.
Director Joe Wright returned to Redcar, where he shot a number of the film's key scenes using 1,000 local extras, to attend the regional premiere screening which took place at The Regent Cinema on the resorts promenade.
Remembering the 1940s setting of the film, the red carpet premiere formed the climax of a nostalgic day of street celebration held close by the cinema.
