The home to school transport service supports young learners by providing transport to local schools.
Eligibility for school transport
A child may be eligible for assistance with travel if they are of compulsory school age and meet one or more of the following categories:
- If a child aged below 8 years old lives more than 2 miles away from their nearest school.
- If a child aged 8-16 years old lives more than 3 miles away from their nearest school.
- Children from low income families whose nearest school is more than 2 miles away.
- Children who wouldn’t be able walk because of their special educational needs, disability or a mobility problem, even if accompanied by a parent or guardian.
- Students who are unable to walk safely to school because there is no safe walking route (as per Road Safety GB guidelines)
The Council have discretionary power to provide travel assistance in other circumstances, but has no legal duty to do so. This is explained in more detail within the Home to School Travel Policy, circumstances in which we may provide discretionary assistance include:
- Children living in temporary/emergency accommodation.
- Children who are in the care of the local authority.
- Children with parents who have disabilities.
- Children with temporary mobility issues.
- Children who are unable to walk safely to school.

If your child attends a special school or has specific travel requirements due to a Special Educational Need, Disability or Health Condition please contact your school who will work with you to complete a more detailed form.
