LIBERAL Democrat, Bill Goodwill, won Redcar & Cleveland Council’s vacant seat in the St Germain’s ward in Marske by just 12 votes in a close-fought by-election yesterday.

Mr Goodwill polled 599 votes in a 48.3 per cent turn-out, ahead of Mike Findley (East Cleveland Independent) with 587 votes, Sue McLeod (Labour) 199 votes, Peter Goodwin (Green Party) 173 votes and Neil Bilham (Conservative) 114 votes.

The by-election was called after the resignation through ill health of Councillor Ken Seymour, who won the seat as a Liberal Democrat in 1999, but switched to Socialist Labour last year.

The result does not alter Labour’s overall three-seat majority. State of the parties: Labour 31, Conservative 14, Liberal Democrat 11, East Cleveland Independents 3.
