Smoke Control Zones
A Smoke Control Zone is an area designated by a local authority where only authorised fuels - for example smokeless fuel, coke, and gas may be burned. Some other fuels are authorised for use, but only when used on specified authorised appliances. As a general rule, wood and logs are not permitted to be burned in a Smoke Control Zone, however small amounts of kindling may be used to light an open fire.
The vast majority of houses within the Borough of Redcar & Cleveland lie within such zones; all urban areas are covered as are most rural communities, and generally the only residences not so covered are isolated farms and the occasional hamlet.
The Environmental Protection Section of the Council has been responsible for designating and enforcing these zones and should be the first contact for confirming whether or not a property is subject to smoke control restrictions. For further information, please contact (01287) 612429.
